Review of Waddesdon: Situated roughly ten km to the west of the large town of Aylesbury, the parish and village of Waddesdon is an old agricultural community with a thirteenth century church. The renowned Waddesdon Manor can be found alongside the village, created in 16th century Renaissance style by the prosperous Rothschild family at the end of 19th C.

Waddesdon village today has a population of approximately two thousand (2011) and continues to be dominated by structures constructed for the Rothschilds (the Five Arrows Hotel, the Village Hall, and properties built for Manor workers). The parish accounts for an area of 7,252 acres (coupled with Eythrope, Westcott, Wormstone and Woodham). Waddesdon formerly had a train station which connected it with near by Aylesbury, this has long been shut down and the village can only be gotten to by road (namely the A41).

Waddesdon Manor HouseWaddesdon in the Past: Unquestionably a Saxon settlement previous to the Norman conquest, Waddesdon manor was controlled by one of Queen Edith's men, Brictric, in those long gone, for the most part undocumented days. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the manor was noted down as being controlled by Miles Crispin & being worth 27 hides. The manor of Waddesdon eventually transferred to John, 7th Duke of Marlborough in the 19th century, having changed hands over and over over the past generations. Politician, art collector & part of a well-off Austrian banking dynasty, Ferdinand de Rothschild, purchased the entire Bucks landed estate of the 7th Duke of Marlborough (John Spencer Churchill) in the late 19th century, including The village of Waddesdon.

Waddesdon Manor: Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild went on to construct the impressive Waddesdon Manor House, from a design by Gabrielle-Hippolyte Destailleur, in the style of a sixteenth century French chateau, wine cellars and all. Baron Ferdinand passed away in 1898, the estate and manor passing down to his sister, Alice Charlotte de Rothschild. As well as being a family residence the Manor was constructed to display the massive collection of tapestries, art and furniture, gathered by the Baron. In the late 1950's, James de Rothschild passed away and Waddesdon Manor House came to be a successful visitor destination when it was bequeathed to the National Trust. Current day Waddesdon Manor offers extensive landscaped gardens, its phenomenal collection of paintings, furniture and ornamental arts, a garden centre, a Rococo style aviary, gift shops, a quality wine cellar, meeting rooms, a wedding venue (The Dairy at Waddesdon), a children's corner, gift shops and top notch restaurants. Waddesdon Manor also hosts a great many events and activities all year round for example food markets, art displays, carol singing, wine tasting events, and horticultural shows.

Waddesdon across the years has been a principally farming village, it's formerly had the names Votesdone (11th C) and Woddesdon (14th C), together with the present spelling of the name. In the eighteenth century local people briefly had a go at silk making, a little factory becoming started in 1843 used as an offshoot of a much larger factory in nearby Aylesbury. Lace manufacture was also performed by lots of the female inhabitants of the parish through the middle to late nineteenth century. In about 1190 building was begun on Waddesdon's St Micheal and All Angels parish church, the current church tower superceded a 14th century one in 1892, the font dates from 1400.
