Review of Waddesdon: An old agricultural community that has a thirteenth century church, Waddesdon is located around nine and a half km west of Aylesbury in Bucks. The well known Waddesdon Manor is located just outside the village, put up in sixteenth century French Renaissance style by the well-to-do Rothschild dynasty towards the end of 19th C.

Waddesdon today houses a population of around two thousand (2011) & continues to be peppered with buildings established by the Rothschild family (the Village Hall, the Five Arrows Hotel and houses built for Manor staff). The parish comprises a little over 7,000 acres (coupled with Westcott, Woodham, Eythrope and Wormstone). Waddesdon at one time had a train station which connected it with nearby Aylesbury, this is long closed and the village may only be gotten to by road (namely the A41).

Waddesdon's Manor HouseWaddesdon's Past History: Without doubt a Saxon settlement up until the Norman conquest, Waddesdon manor was controlled by Brictric, one of Queen Edith's men, in those very early, mostly unrecorded times. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the manor was registered as retained by Miles Crispin & having a value of 27 hides. The manor of Waddesdon finally passed on to John Spencer Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough in the nineteenth century, having changed hands over and over again over the centuries. In eighteen seventy four the 7th Duke of Marlborough sold his entire Bucks estate, which included Waddesdon, to Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, a politician (he was High Sheriff of Bucks and Liberal Member of Parliment for Aylesbury), art collector & part of the wealthy Rothschild banking family of Austria.

Waddesdon Manor House: The beautiful Waddesdon Manor House, in the Renaissance (Rebirth) style of a 16th century French chateau, wine cellars and all, was put up by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, using a design by Gabrielle-Hippolyte Destailleur. The estate and manor passed on to Alice Charlotte de Rothschild, Ferdinand's sister, when he died in 1898. A totally new tourism attraction came to be at the time the National Trust took control of the administration of the Manor following the death of James de Rothschild. There's a lot of things that draw in visitors to Waddesdon Manor and these include good restaurants, conference areas, gift shops, kid's corner, an outstanding wedding venue, a garden and plant centre plus much more combined with the gardens plus the spectacular house itself with its displays of paintings, statues and furniture. The Manor also hosts loads of activities and events throughout the year such as food markets, art displays, carol singing, horticultural shows and wine tasting events.

Waddesdon across the centuries has been a largely agricultural village, it has formerly had the titles Votesdone (eleventh century) and Woddesdon (14th C), together with the most current spelling. In addition to agriculture and farming, lace manufacturing and silk making were other ways in which local folks have made an income in the village in the past. The parish church of Saint Michael & All Angels was first erected in about 1190 in the village, the font is from around 1400 and the current church tower from 1892.
