Review of Waddesdon: A village and parish based 10 kilometres west of Aylesbury, Waddesdon is an ancient farming community that has a church first built in the 13th century. Waddesdon is actually most commonly known as being the location of the Rothschild family owned, sixteenth century Renaissance style, Waddesdon Manor (nowadays administered by the National Trust), bringing countless tourists to the area.

Modern day Waddesdon has a population of around 2,000 (in 2011) and is still peppered with structures erected for the Rothschild family (the Village Hall, the Five Arrows Hotel & houses built for Manor employees). Waddesdon previously had a rail station which linked it with neighbouring Aylesbury, this is long closed down and the village may only be reached by road (the A41). The parish covers over seven thousand acres (in conjunction with Westcott, Eythrope, Woodham & Wormstone).

Waddesdon Manor BucksWaddesdon History: In the Domesday Book of 1086 the manor of Waddesdon was having a value of 27 hides & recorded to be held by Miles Crispin, but before this it was undeniably a Saxon village & was controlled by Brictric, one of Queen Edith's men. Waddesdon manor eventually handed to John, 7th Duke of Marlborough during the nineteenth century, having changed hands often over the previous generations. In the 1870's the 7th Duke of Marlborough sold his whole Bucks estate, that included the parish of Waddesdon, to Ferdinand de Rothschild, a politician (he was High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire and Liberal MP representing Aylesbury), art enthusiast & the wealthy Rothschild banking dynasty of Austria.

Waddesdon Manor House: Ferdinand de Rothschild subsequently went on to build the distinctive Waddesdon Manor House, from a layout by Gabrielle-Hippolyte Destailleur, in the Renaissance style of a sixteenth century French chateau, right down to the wine cellars. Baron Ferdinand died in 1898, his estate passing to his sister, Alice Charlotte de Rothschild. The Manor was meant both as a family residence and also to display the Baron's enormous collection of tapestries, furniture and art. Waddesdon Manor was entrusted to the National Trust after the passing of James de Rothschild in the late 1950's, it subsequently came to be a well-known visitor attraction. Present day Waddesdon Manor offers extensive gardens, a world-renowned collection of paintings, furniture and decorative arts, a garden centre, a Rococo aviary, gift shops, a quality wine cellar, conference areas, a wedding venue (The Dairy at Waddesdon), a childrens area, gift shops and top notch restaurants. Art displays, carol singing, food markets, horticultural events and wine samplings are included in the tons of events and activities which are usually held year round at waddesdon manor and grounds.

Other than the current name the community of Waddesdon has also been called Votesdone (11th C) and Woddesdon (14th century), over the years it's largely counted on agriculture and farming. Various alternative industries which sustained local people as well as agriculture and farming are silk making and lace manufacture. St Michael and All Angels parish church was first constructed in about 1190 in the village, the font is from about 1400 & the current tower from 1892.
