Review of Waddesdon: Positioned around ten kilometres west of Aylesbury, the parish and village of Waddesdon is a historic farming area with a 13th century church. Well known as the setting for the extraordinary Waddesdon Manor, erected by the rich Rothschilds family in the Renaissance style of a sixteenth century French chateau (today looked after by the National Trust), Waddesdon has basically been an estate village since the late 19th C.

The village today has a populace of approximately two thousand (in 2011) & continues to be dominated by buildings established for the Rothschilds (the Five Arrows Hotel, the Village Hall, and properties built for Manor personnel). Once connected with nearby Aylesbury by means of railway, Waddesdon rail station is long shut down & the village can only be reached by road (the A41). The parish (together with Westcott, Eythrope, Woodham & Wormstone) covers over 7,000 acres.

Waddesdon's Manor HouseA History of Waddesdon: Undeniably a Saxon village up until the Norman conquest, the manor of Waddesdon was controlled by one of Queen Edith's men, Brictric, in those far off, mostly unrecorded times. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the manor was described as being possessed by Miles Crispin and being worth 27 hides. The manor of Waddesdon eventually passed on to John, 7th Duke of Marlborough during the 19th century, having swapped hands many times over the past generations. In the 1870's the Duke of Marlborough sold off his extensive Bucks landed estate, which included Waddesdon, to Ferdinand de Rothschild, a politician (he was High Sheriff of Bucks & Liberal MP for Aylesbury), art collector and part of the well-heeled Rothschild banking dynasty.

Waddesdon Manor: Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild went on to construct the spectacular Waddesdon Manor House, from a layout by Gabrielle-Hippolyte Destailleur, in the Renaissance style of a sixteenth century French chateau, wine cellars and all. Ferdinand died in 1898, his estate and manor inherited by his sister, Alice Charlotte de Rothschild. In the late 1950's, right after the passing of James de Rothschild, Waddesdon Manor was given to the National Trust, it then came to be a successful visitor attraction. Today's Waddesdon Manor has massive landscaped gardens, an internationally acclaimed collection of paintings, furniture and decorative arts, a plant centre, a Rococo aviary, a wine cellar, gift shops, meeting rooms, a marriage venue (The Dairy at Waddesdon), a kid's area, gift shops and high class restaurants. Waddesdon Manor also plays host to plenty of functions during the year such as carol singing, food markets, art displays, wine tasting events, and horticultural shows.

Besides the existing name the village of Waddesdon has also been named Votesdone (11th C) and Woddesdon (14th C), throughout the generations it's principally depended on farming. Various additional crafts that have supported local individuals apart from farming are silk manufacturing and lace making. Saint Michael & All Angels parish church was originally erected in around 1190 in Waddesdon, the font is from about 1400 and the present church tower from 1892.
