Review of Waddesdon: A village and parish found 10 kilometers west of the large town of Aylesbury, Waddesdon is an old farming area which has a church first constructed in the thirteenth century. The famed Waddesdon Manor is located beside the village, put up in 16th century Renaissance style by the wealthy Rothschild dynasty towards the end of nineteenth century.

Present day Waddesdon houses a populace of approximately two thousand (in 2011) & is still dominated by buildings established by the Rothschild family (the Five Arrows Hotel, the Village Hall, & dwellings built for Manor employees). Waddesdon Manor BuckinghamshireA History of Waddesdon: Up until the Norman conquest, Waddesdon was a Saxon settlement, the manor being controlled by one of Queen Edith's men, Brictric. In the 1086 Domesday Book the manor was priced at 27 hides and recorded as possessed by Miles Crispin. Subsequently the manor of Waddesdon was awarded to Henry of Oxford and thereafter to the Courtenay family, it swapped control frequently until ultimately passing to John 7th Duke of Marlborough. Art enthusiast, politician & member of a prosperous Austrian banking family, Ferdinand de Rothschild, acquired the whole Bucks landed estate of the Duke of Marlborough in eighteen seventy four, including Waddesdon & surrounding areas.

Waddesdon Manor House: The stunning Waddesdon Manor House, in the Rebirth (Renaissance) style of a 16th c French chateau, right down to the wine cellars, was erected by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, using a design by Gabrielle-Hippolyte Destailleur. The manor and estate passed to Alice Charlotte de Rothschild, Baron Ferdinand's sister, after he passed away in 1898. Waddesdon Manor was constructed both as a family residence and also to hold the Baron's large collection of tapestries, furniture and art. In 1957, James de Rothschild passed away and Waddesdon Manor developed into a favourite tourism destination when it was given to the National Trust. Waddesdon through the centuries was a traditionally agricultural community, it has had the titles Votesdone (11th century) and Woddesdon (14th century), together with the current day spelling.
