Review of Waddesdon: Found about ten km west of Aylesbury, the parish and small village of Waddesdon is an old farming community boasting a 13th century church. Waddesdon has been mainly an estate village since the late nineteenth century at the time the remarkable Renaissance style Waddesdon Manor was established by the prosperous Rothschilds dynasty, along with houses for the employees.

Present day Waddesdon houses a population of approximately 2,100 (2011) and is still peppered with structures established by the Rothschild family (the Five Arrows Hotel, the Village Hall, & housing built for Manor workers). Waddesdon in the past had a railway station which connected it with neighbouring Aylesbury, this has long since closed & the village can now only be reached by road (A41). The parish covers an area of 7,252 acres (including Westcott, Woodham, Eythrope & Wormstone).

In the Domesday Book of 1086 the manor was valued at 27 hides & documented as being retained by Miles Crispin. Waddesdon manor was owned by lots of people prior to eventually ending up with John Spencer Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough in the nineteenth century, these included Henry of Oxford and Thomas Earl of Devon. It was the previously mentioned Duke of Marlborough who, in the 1870's, sold off The parish of Waddesdon and his large Bucks estate to Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild an MP, art collector & the well-off Rothschild banking dynasty.

Waddesdon Manor: Ferdinand de Rothschild went on to construct the distinctive Waddesdon Manor House, using a design by Gabrielle-Hippolyte Destailleur, in the Renaissance style of a sixteenth century French chateau, wine cellars and all. Ferdinand passed away in 1898, the estate being inherited by his sister, Alice Charlotte de Rothschild. The Manor was entrusted to the National Trust right after the passing of James de Rothschild in 1957, it afterwards came to be a successful tourism hotspot. Waddesdon Manor has its phenomenal collection of French furniture, paintings and decorative arts, large gardens, a first-rate wine cellar, a Rococo style aviary, plant centre, online shop, conference rooms, kid's corner, quality eateries, giftshops and even boasts marriage services (The Dairy at Waddesdon Manor). The Manor of course organizes lots of activities and events during the year for instance carol singing, food markets, art events, horticultural shows and wine samplings.

Across the years, Waddesdon has been a mostly farming community and in addition to the present-day title has been known varyingly as Votesdone (11th C) and Woddesdon (fourteenth century). In the eighteenth century local people momentarily had a go at silk manufacturing, a smallish factory established in 1843 as an addition to the much larger factory in nearby Aylesbury. Pillow lace making was in addition performed by a lot of the women of the parish through the middle to late nineteenth century. In around 1190 building was started on Waddesdon's parish church of Saint Michael & All Angels, the present tower succeeded a fourteenth century one in 1892, the font originates from 1400.
