Waddesdon Manor and GardensWaddesdon History: Previous to the Norman conquest, Waddesdon was a Saxon village, the manor being retained by one of Queen Edith's men, Brictric. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the manor was priced at 27 hides and documented as held by Miles Crispin. The manor of Waddesdon was held by numerous individuals before finally passing to John, 7th Duke of Marlborough in the nineteenth century, these included Henry of Oxford and Thomas Earl of Devon. Art collector, politician & a wealthy Austrian banking family, Ferdinand de Rothschild, purchased the extensive Bucks estate of the 7th Duke of Marlborough (John Spencer Churchill) in eighteen seventy four, which included The village of Waddesdon.

Waddesdon Manor House: Ferdinand de Rothschild went on to build the stunning Waddesdon Manor House, on a layout by Gabrielle-Hippolyte Destailleur, in the Renaissance style of a 16th century French chateau, wine cellars and all. Ferdinand passed away in 1898, the estate inherited by his sister, Alice Charlotte de Rothschild. In the late 1950's, James de Rothschild died and Waddesdon Manor became a well known visitor destination once it was handed over to the National Trust. Waddesdon Manor boasts its phenomenal displays of paintings, French furniture and decorative arts, substantial gardens, a first-rate wine cellar, a Rococo style aviary, online shop, plant centre, meeting rooms, children's corner, high class eateries, giftshops and even offers wedding services (The Dairy at Waddesdon Manor). The Manor also plays host to lots of activities and events during the year for instance art shows, carol singing, food markets, wine tastings, and horticultural shows.

Over the centuries, Waddesdon was a mostly agricultural village and along with the modern day title has been identified diversely as Votesdone (11th century) and Woddesdon (fourteenth century). In approximately 1190 building was started on Waddesdon's parish church of St Michael and All Angels, the current tower replaced a fourteenth century one in 1892, the font originates from 1400.
