Review of Waddesdon: Waddesdon in Bucks is a historic farming community found roughly ten kilometres west of the large town of Aylesbury, it has a church which dates from the 13th century. Waddesdon has been basically an estate village since the late 19th C at which time the lovely Renaissance style Waddesdon Manor was built by the successful Rothschilds dynasty, in addition to housing for the staff.

With its current population of about 2,100 (2011), Waddesdon village today is still dominated by buildings constructed for the Rothschilds (the village hall, the Five Arrows hotel and housing built for manor workers). Waddesdon until the 1930's had a train station which joined it to nearby Aylesbury, this has long been closed down & the village can just be accessed by road (A41). Waddesdon parish covers just over 7,000 acres (combined with Eythrope, Westcott, Wormstone & Woodham).

Waddesdon ManorWaddesdon in the Past: Right before the Norman conquest, Waddesdon was certainly a Saxon village, the manor being controlled by Brictric, one of Queen Edith's men. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the manor was having a value of twenty seven hides & noted down as being controlled by Miles Crispin. The manor of Waddesdon was owned by countless people before ultimately passing to John Spencer Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough in the nineteenth century, these included Thomas Earl of Devon and Henry of Oxford. In the late nineteenth century the 7th Duke of Marlborough sold off his extensive Buckinghamshire landed estate, which included the parish of Waddesdon, to Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, a politician (he was High Sheriff of Bucks and Liberal MP representing Aylesbury), art enthusiast & part of the prosperous Rothschild banking family of Austria.

Waddesdon Manor House: The Rebirth (Renaissance) style Waddesdon Manor House was thereafter founded by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, reproducing a 16th C French chateau, right down to the wine cellars. The estate was inherited by Baron Ferdinand's sister, Alice Charlotte de Rothschild, in 1898, after Baron Ferdinand died at the Manor itself on the same day as his birth in 1898. As well as displaying the Baron's sizeable collection of tapestries, furniture and art, the Manor House also functioned as a residence. Waddesdon Manor was handed to the National Trust following the death of James de Rothschild in the late 1950's, it afterwards became a well known tourism hotspot. There are numerous features which lure sightseers to Waddesdon Manor for example great restaurants, conference areas, gift outlets, kid's corner, a top notch marriage venue, a garden centre plus much more combined with the gardens and the incredible Manor itself featuring its displays of art work, figurines and furniture. The Manor of course holds plenty of events and activities all through the year for instance art events, carol singing, food markets, wine tastings, and horticultural shows.

Over the ages, Waddesdon endured as a largely farming community and along with the present title has been known varyingly as Votesdone (11th century) and Woddesdon (fourteenth century). Various alternative industries which have supported local citizens aside from agriculture and farming are silk making and lace making. The structure of the parish church Saint Michael and All Angels commenced in 1190, it was expanded and embellished frequently over the ages, especially throughout the medieval and Victorian periods. The Font was added in around 1400, the tower was reconstructed in 1892, updating the previous one constructed during the fourteenth century.
