Review of Waddesdon: A traditional farming community boasting a 13th century church, Waddesdon is placed approximately six miles to the west of the town of Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire (Bucks). Widely known as the setting for the impressive Waddesdon Manor, built by the rich Rothschilds family in the Renaissance style of a 16th century French chateau (nowadays administered by the National Trust), Waddesdon has been mostly an estate village since the late nineteenth century.

Still peppered with structures erected for the Rothschild family (the village hall, the Five Arrows hotel & houses built for manor workers), present day Waddesdon houses a population of about 2,000 (2011 census). Waddesdon in the old days had a railway station which connected it with neighbouring Aylesbury, this is long closed down & the village may only be got to by road (namely the A41). The parish takes in a little over 7,000 acres (along with Eythrope, Woodham, Wormstone and Westcott).

The Manor at WaddesdonWaddesdon Over the Centuries: In the 1086 Domesday Book Waddesdon manor was being worth 27 hides & listed to be retained by Miles Crispin, however prior to this it was without doubt a Saxon settlement and was controlled by Brictric, one of Queen Edith's men. Waddesdon manor ultimately transferred to John Spencer Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough in the nineteenth century, having changed hands often over the past years. In eighteen seventy four the 7th Duke of Marlborough sold off his large Bucks estate, which included the parish of Waddesdon, to Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, a politician (he was High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire and Liberal MP representing Aylesbury), art enthusiast and part of the rich Austrian Rothschild banking family.

Waddesdon Manor: Ferdinand de Rothschild subsequently went on to build the amazing Waddesdon Manor House, using a design by Gabrielle-Hippolyte Destailleur, in the Renaissance style of a 16th C French chateau, wine cellars and all. Baron Ferdinand died in 1898, the estate and manor passing down to his sister, Alice Charlotte de Rothschild. Aside from showing off the Baron's sizeable collection of tapestries, furniture and art, the Manor also acted as a family home. The Manor was given to the National Trust on the passing of James de Rothschild in the late 1950's, it ultimately came to be a well-known tourist destination. Waddesdon Manor has its phenomenal collection of French furniture, paintings and decorative arts, substantial landscaped gardens, a superb wine cellar, a Rococo style aviary, plant centre, online shop, conference rooms, kid's area, top quality restaurants, gift shops and even provides marriage services (The Dairy at Waddesdon Manor). Plenty of functions and events are held at the Manor year round for example art exhibitions, carol singing, food markets, horticultural shows and wine tasting events.

Waddesdon throughout the centuries was a traditionally agricultural community, it's formerly had the names Votesdone (11th century) and Woddesdon (14th century), as well as the present spelling. Some other crafts which have sustained local individuals apart from agriculture and farming were silk manufacturing and lace manufacturing. In around 1190 building was begun on Waddesdon's parish church of St Michael & All Angels, the present church tower updated a fourteenth century one in 1892, the font is dated 1400.
