Review of Waddesdon: A village and parish found 6 miles west of Aylesbury, Waddesdon is a historic agricultural area that has a parish church originating from the 13th century. Waddesdon has been basically an estate village since the late 19th C when the eye-catching Renaissance style Waddesdon Manor was erected by the rich Rothschilds family, along with housing for the house staff.

Still dominated by structures erected for the Rothschild family (the village hall, the Five Arrows hotel and dwellings built for manor employees), modern day Waddesdon has a population of approximately 2,000 (2011). Formerly linked to neighbouring Aylesbury by means of train, Waddesdon train station is now closed and the village can just be accessed by road (namely the A41). The parish of Waddesdon (including Westcott, Woodham, Eythrope and Wormstone) covers over 7,000 acres.

Waddesdon ManorWaddesdon's Past History: Just before the Conquest by the Normans, Waddesdon would have been a Saxon village, the manor being held by one of Queen Edith's men, Brictric. In the 1086 Domesday Book the manor was being worth twenty seven hides & noted down to be retained by Miles Crispin. Waddesdon manor ultimately transferred to John Spencer Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough in the 19th century, having changed hands many times over the previous years. It was formerly named Duke of Marlborough who, in the late 19th century, sold off The parish of Waddesdon and his entire Bucks estate to Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild an MP, art collector and one of the rich Austrian Rothschild banking family.

Waddesdon Manor House: The stunning Waddesdon Manor House, in the Rebirth (Renaissance) style of a 16th c French chateau, wine cellars and all, was conceived by Ferdinand de Rothschild, using a layout by Gabrielle-Hippolyte Destailleur. The estate and manor passed down to Alice Charlotte de Rothschild, Ferdinand's sister, after he passed away in 1898. In addition to housing the Baron's massive collection of tapestries, furniture and art, the Manor House also functioned as a family home. In the late 1950's, James de Rothschild passed away and Waddesdon Manor came to be a very popular tourism hotspot soon after it was entrusted to the National Trust. There are plenty of things that draw in sightseers to Waddesdon Manor including excellent restaurants, conference areas, gift shops, kid's corner, a first class wedding venue, a garden centre and even more in addition to the gardens plus the astounding residence itself featuring its displays of paintings, statues and fine furniture. Carol singing, art displays, food markets, wine samplings, and horticultural shows are included in the diverse functions and events which are held year round at the manor.

Besides the present day name the village of Waddesdon has also been known as Votesdone (11th C) and Woddesdon (14th century), across the ages it has typically depended on agriculture and farming. Among other industries which supported local citizens in addition to agriculture and farming are silk manufacture and lace manufacturing. The building of the parish church Saint Michael & All Angels was started in 1190, it was expanded & enhanced again and again across the ages, particularly over the medieval and Victorian periods.
