Review of Waddesdon: A small village and parish found 6 miles to the west of the town of Aylesbury, Waddesdon is an ancient farming community with a parish church dating from the 13th century. The recognized Waddesdon Manor can be found alongside the village, created in 16th century Renaissance style by the well-off Rothschild dynasty in the late 19th century.

With its current population of roughly 2,000 (census of 2011), Waddesdon today is still dominated by structures built by the Rothschilds (the village hall, the Five Arrows hotel & properties built for manor employees). The parish of Waddesdon covers an area of 7,252 acres (in addition to Eythrope, Woodham, Wormstone & Westcott). Waddesdon once had a railway station which connected it to neighbouring Aylesbury, this has long since closed down and the village can now only be reached by road (namely the A41).

Waddesdon Manor and GardensWaddesdon History: In the Domesday Book of 1086 the manor of Waddesdon was priced at 27 hides and registered as retained by Miles Crispin, whilst before this it was clearly a Saxon settlement & was possessed by Brictric, one of Queen Edith's men. Waddesdon manor was controlled by various people previous to eventually ending up with John Spencer Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough during the nineteenth century, these included Henry of Oxford and Thomas Earl of Devon. Art collector, politician and one of a rich Austrian banking dynasty, Ferdinand de Rothschild, obtained the large Buckinghamshire landed estate of the 7th Duke of Marlborough (John Spencer Churchill) in the 1870's, including Waddesdon.

Waddesdon Manor: Ferdinand de Rothschild proceeded to construct the outstanding Waddesdon Manor House, on a design by Gabrielle-Hippolyte Destailleur, in the style of a 16th C French chateau, wine cellars and all. Ferdinand passed away in 1898, the estate passing down to his sister, Alice Charlotte de Rothschild. Together with being a family residence the Manor House was built to house the sizeable collection of art, tapestries and furniture, gathered by the Baron. In the late 1950's, James de Rothschild died and Waddesdon Manor came to be a fashionable visitor hotspot when it was entrusted to the National Trust. Waddesdon Manor has a world-famous collection of French furniture, paintings and decorative arts, large gardens, a superb wine cellar, a Rococo style aviary, online shop, plant centre, conference rooms, childrens corner, top quality eateries, giftshops and also boasts wedding services (The Dairy at Waddesdon Manor). Many different activities and events are held at the Manor all year long like carol singing, food markets, art displays, wine samplings, and horticultural shows.

Waddesdon through the ages was a traditionally farming village, it's previously had the titles Votesdone (11th century) and Woddesdon (14th C), together with the current spelling of the name. Amongst additional industries which have sustained local folk other than farming are silk making and lace manufacture. St Michael and All Angels parish church was initially erected in approximately 1190 in the village, the font dates back to about 1400 & the present church tower from 1892.
