Review of Waddesdon: A parish and small village found nine and a half kilometers west of Aylesbury, Waddesdon is a traditional agricultural community boasting a parish church which dates from the thirteenth century. Waddesdon is perhaps most recognized as the location of the Rothschild family built, Renaissance style, Waddesdon Manor (now administered by the National Trust), attracting a lot of visitors to the village.

Still dominated by structures constructed for the Rothschild family (the Five Arrows hotel, the village hall, & properties built for manor personnel), the village today has a population of about 2,100 (census of 2011). Waddesdon until the 1930's had a rail station which linked it to neighbouring Aylesbury, this has long been closed down and the village can only be got to by road (namely the A41). The parish of Waddesdon covers an area of 7,252 acres (combined with Wormstone, Westcott, Woodham and Eythrope).

Waddesdon Manor and GardensWaddesdon in the Past: Certainly a Saxon settlement until the conquest by the Normans, the manor of Waddesdon was controlled by Brictric, one of Queen Edith's men, in those long gone, typically unrecorded times. In the 1086 Domesday Book the manor was described to be held by Miles Crispin & priced at 27 hides. Waddesdon manor ultimately passed to John Spencer Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough during the nineteenth century, having changed hands often over the past generations. Art enthusiast, politician & member of a rich Austrian banking dynasty, Ferdinand de Rothschild, bought the whole Bucks landed estate of the 7th Duke of Marlborough (John Spencer Churchill) in eighteen seventy four, including The parish of Waddesdon.

Waddesdon Manor House: Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild subsequently went on to build the distinctive Waddesdon Manor House, on a layout by Gabrielle-Hippolyte Destailleur, in the style of a 16th C French chateau, right down to the wine cellars. Ferdinand passed away in 1898, his estate and manor passing down to his sister, Alice Charlotte de Rothschild. Aside from displaying the Baron's sizeable collection of tapestries, furniture and art, Waddesdon Manor also served as a family residence. In the late 1950's, James de Rothschild passed away and Waddesdon Manor House came to be a well-liked tourist destination when it was entrusted to the National Trust. Waddesdon Manor has its phenomenal collection of paintings, French furniture and decorative arts, large landscaped gardens, a superb wine cellar, a Rococo style aviary, online shop, plant centre, conference rooms, children's area, high quality eateries, gift shops and additionally features marriage services (The Dairy at Waddesdon Manor). Dozens of events are held at Waddesdon Manor all year round like food markets, art exhibitions, carol singing, wine tasting events, and horticultural shows.

Apart from the current day name the village of Waddesdon has further been referred to as Votesdone (eleventh century) and Woddesdon (fourteenth century), over the ages it's mostly endured through farming. Apart from farming, lace manufacturing and silk making are different ways that local people made an income in the area over the centuries. In approximately 1190 building began on Waddesdon's parish church of Saint Michael & All Angels, the current tower superseded a fourteenth century one in 1892, the font originates from 1400.
