Review of Waddesdon: Positioned around 9.5 kilometres west of the town of Aylesbury, the parish and small village of Waddesdon is a historical farming community which has a 13th century parish church. Widely known as the location of the attractive Waddesdon Manor, established by the wealthy Rothschilds dynasty in the Renaissance style of a 16th century French chateau (now administered by the National Trust), Waddesdon has been primarily an estate village since the end of the 19th C.

Present day Waddesdon has a population of approximately 2,000 (in 2011) & continues to be dominated by buildings erected by the Rothschild family (the Village Hall, the Five Arrows Hotel and houses built for Manor staff). In the old days linked with neighbouring Aylesbury by train, Waddesdon railway station is now decommissioned and the village can now only be accessed by road (A41). The parish (including Eythrope, Woodham, Wormstone and Westcott) covers an area of 7,252 acres.

Waddesdon Manor BuckinghamshireWaddesdon in the Past: Without doubt a Saxon settlement prior to the conquest by the Normans, the manor of Waddesdon was controlled by Brictric, one of Queen Edith's men, in those early, mostly unrecorded days. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the manor was described as possessed by Miles Crispin & valued at twenty seven hides. Subsequently Waddesdon manor was accorded to Henry of Oxford and thereafter to the Courtenay family, it switched control many times until ultimately passing to John 7th Duke of Marlborough. Politician, art enthusiast & member of a successful Austrian banking dynasty, Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, purchased the complete Buckinghamshire estate of the 7th Duke of Marlborough in the 1870's, which included The parish of Waddesdon.

Waddesdon Manor House: The impressive Waddesdon Manor House, in the Rebirth (Renaissance) style of a 16th century French chateau, right down to the wine cellars, was erected by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, based on a design by Gabrielle-Hippolyte Destailleur. The manor and estate passed to Alice Charlotte de Rothschild, the Baron's sister, after he died in 1898. The Manor was built both as a residence and to house Baron Rothschild's enormous collection of furniture, art and tapestries. Waddesdon Manor was handed to the National Trust after the passing of James de Rothschild in 1957, it then became a favourite tourism attraction. Present day Waddesdon Manor delivers considerable landscaped gardens, its phenomenal displays of paintings, furniture and ornamental arts, a plant centre, a Rococo aviary, gift shops, a quality wine cellar, conference areas, a wedding venue (The Dairy at Waddesdon), a childrens area, gift shops and top notch restaurants. Waddesdon Manor also organizes a great many functions and events year round for example food markets, art events, carol singing, wine tastings, and horticultural shows.

Apart from the modern day name the village of Waddesdon has also been named Votesdone (eleventh century) and Woddesdon (fourteenth century), across the ages it's typically survived through farming. During the eighteenth century the village momentarily delved into silk manufacture, with a tiny factory established in 1843 used as an addition to the much larger factory in nearby Aylesbury. Pillow lace manufacture was additionally done by many of the female citizens of the parish in the middle to late 19th century. In around 1190 building was begun on Waddesdon's St Micheal & All Angels parish church, the current church tower replaced a 14th century one in 1892, the font is dated 1400.
