Review of Waddesdon: A parish and small village found ten kilometres to the west of the town of Aylesbury, Waddesdon is an old farming area having a parish church first built in the 13th century. Famed as the setting for the sensational Waddesdon Manor, erected by the rich Rothschilds dynasty in the Renaissance style of a 16th century French chateau (nowadays managed by the National Trust), Waddesdon has been largely an estate village since the late nineteenth century.

With a current populace of about 2,100 (2011), modern day Waddesdon continues to be peppered with buildings established for the Rothschilds (the village hall, the Five Arrows hotel & properties built for manor personnel). Waddesdon previously had a train station which connected it with nearby Aylesbury, this has long since closed and the village can now only be reached by road (the A41). Waddesdon parish covers a little over seven thousand acres (coupled with Eythrope, Westcott, Wormstone & Woodham).

Waddesdon's Manor HouseA Short History of Waddesdon: In the 1086 Domesday Book Waddesdon manor was priced at twenty seven hides & listed to be possessed by Miles Crispin, but prior to this it was clearly a Saxon settlement and was retained by Brictric, one of Queen Edith's men. Waddesdon manor ultimately handed to John Spencer Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough in the nineteenth century, having changed hands frequently over the previous generations. In eighteen seventy four the 7th Duke of Marlborough (John Spencer Churchill) sold his entire Bucks estate, including Waddesdon, to Ferdinand de Rothschild, a politician (he was High Sheriff of Bucks and Liberal Member of Parliment for Aylesbury), art enthusiast & part of the prosperous Rothschild banking dynasty.

Waddesdon Manor: The eye-catching Waddesdon Manor House, in the Rebirth (Renaissance) style of a 16th century French chateau, right down to the wine cellars, was built by Ferdinand de Rothschild, according to a design by Gabrielle-Hippolyte Destailleur. The estate and manor was inherited by Alice Charlotte de Rothschild, Ferdinand's sister, after he died in 1898. In 1957, James de Rothschild died and Waddesdon Manor came to be a successful visitor destination after it was passed on to the National Trust. Present day Waddesdon Manor boasts considerable gardens, a world-famous displays of paintings, furniture and decorative arts, a plant centre, a Rococo style aviary, gift shops, a quality wine cellar, conference rooms, a wedding venue (The Dairy at Waddesdon), a childrens corner, first class restaurants and gift shops. Different functions and events are held at the Manor all year long like carol singing, art exhibitions, food markets, horticultural shows and wine tasting events.

Waddesdon through the centuries was a typically agricultural village, it's had the titles Votesdone (11th C) and Woddesdon (14th C), in addition to the current spelling. Various additional crafts which have supported local inhabitants apart from farming are silk manufacture and lace manufacture. The parish church of Saint Michael & All Angels was first erected in around 1190 in the village, the font dates back to around 1400 & the present tower from 1892.
