Review of Waddesdon: Located around 6 miles west of Aylesbury, the parish and village of Waddesdon is a historic agricultural community with a 13th century parish church. Waddesdon is no doubt best known as the location of the Rothschild dynasty built, sixteenth century Renaissance style, Waddesdon Manor (today taken care of by the National Trust), drawing numerous tourists to the village.

Many of the buildings built by the Rothschild family (dwellings built for manor employees, the Five Arrows hotel & the village hall) continue to dominate the village today & therefore inhabited by & valued by its populace of around two thousand (2011 census). The parish of Waddesdon (coupled with Eythrope, Westcott, Wormstone & Woodham) covers roughly 7,000 acres. Once reachable from nearby Aylesbury by way of rail, Waddesdon rail station has long since closed down & the village can now only be accessed by road (A41).

Waddesdon Manor HouseA History of Waddesdon: Prior to the Norman conquest, Waddesdon was a Saxon village, the manor being retained by Brictric, one of Queen Edith's men. In the 1086 Domesday Book the manor was valued at twenty seven hides & noted down as being possessed by Miles Crispin. The manor of Waddesdon eventually transferred to John Spencer Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough in the 19th century, having changed hands several times over the previous years. Politician, art enthusiast and member of a rich Austrian banking family, Ferdinand de Rothschild, acquired the complete Bucks landed estate of the 7th Duke of Marlborough (John Spencer Churchill) in eighteen seventy four, that included Waddesdon & surrounding areas.

Waddesdon Manor House: Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild proceeded to build the beautiful Waddesdon Manor House, using a layout by Gabrielle-Hippolyte Destailleur, in the style of a 16th C French chateau, wine cellars and all. Baron Ferdinand died in 1898, the estate inherited by his sister, Alice Charlotte de Rothschild. The Manor House was constructed as a residence and to show off the Baron's enormous collection of tapestries, art and furniture. A fabulous visitor attraction was created as soon as the National Trust took over the managing of the Manor after the passing of James de Rothschild. Present day Waddesdon Manor has extensive gardens, its phenomenal displays of furniture, paintings and ornamental arts, a garden centre, a Rococo aviary, a wine cellar, gift shops, conference areas, a marriage venue (The Dairy at Waddesdon), a child's corner, high-class restaurants and gift shops. Waddesdon Manor and grounds additionally plays host to several functions and events all year round including art shows, food markets, carol singing, wine samplings, and horticultural events.

Waddesdon through the centuries has been a principally agricultural community, it has had the names Votesdone (eleventh century) and Woddesdon (14th C), along with the existing spelling of the name. As well as agriculture, lace making and silk manufacture are alternative ways in which local folks made a little money in Waddesdon in the past. St Michael & All Angels parish church was firstly built in around 1190 in the village, the font dates from about 1400 & the present church tower from 1892.
