Review of Waddesdon: Located approximately 9.5 km west of the town of Aylesbury, the small village and parish of Waddesdon is an old farming community boasting a 13th century parish church. The recognized Waddesdon Manor can be found near the village, erected in sixteenth century Renaissance style by the well-off Rothschild dynasty towards the end of 19th C.

With a present population of approximately 2,000 (2011), Waddesdon today continues to be dominated by buildings established for the Rothschilds (the Five Arrows hotel, the village hall, & dwellings built for manor personnel). In the past connected to neighbouring Aylesbury by railway, Waddesdon railway station has long been decommissioned & the village may only be accessed by road (namely the A41). The parish of Waddesdon (together with Westcott, Woodham, Eythrope & Wormstone) covers just over 7,000 acres.

Waddesdon's Manor HouseWaddesdon Over the Centuries: Most definitely a Saxon settlement previous to the conquest by the Normans, Waddesdon manor was held by Brictric, one of Queen Edith's men, in those far off, generally undocumented times. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the manor was registered as being held by Miles Crispin and having a value of twenty seven hides. Waddesdon manor was overseen by a number of individuals previous to eventually passing to John, 7th Duke of Marlborough during the nineteenth century, these included Henry of Oxford, the Courtenay family and Thomas Earl of Devon. In the late 19th century the 7th Duke of Marlborough (John Spencer Churchill) sold his large Buckinghamshire landed estate, that included Waddesdon & surrounding areas, to Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, a politician (he was High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire & Liberal Member of Parliment representing Aylesbury), art enthusiast and part of the prosperous Rothschild banking family.

Waddesdon Manor: The Renaissance (Rebirth) style Waddesdon Manor House was later built by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, replicating a 16th century French chateau, right down to the wine cellars. The manor and estate passed down to The Baron's sister, Alice Charlotte de Rothschild, in 1898, when Ferdinand died at the Manor on the same day as his birth in 1898. In addition to acting as a residence the Manor House was conceived to house the vast collection of tapestries, art and furniture, gathered by the Baron. In the late 1950's, James de Rothschild passed away and the Manor came to be a successful visitor attraction once it was bequeathed to the National Trust. Today's Waddesdon Manor features enormous landscaped gardens, a world-renowned displays of paintings, furniture and ornamental arts, a garden centre, a Rococo style aviary, gift shops, a quality wine cellar, conference rooms, a wedding venue (The Dairy at Waddesdon), a children's area, high-class restaurants and gift shops. Carol singing, food markets, art exhibitions, wine samplings, and horticultural events are among the many different events which might be held year round at the manor.

In addition to the present title the village of Waddesdon has also been referred to as Votesdone (11th C) and Woddesdon (fourteenth century), through the centuries it's primarily relied on agriculture. Among different crafts which supported local individuals aside from agriculture and farming were silk making and lace making. In approximately 1190 building commenced on Waddesdon's parish church of Saint Michael & All Angels, the present tower supplanted a fourteenth century one in 1892, the font is from 1400.
