Review of Waddesdon: Situated approximately 10 km to the west of the large town of Aylesbury, the parish and village of Waddesdon is a historical agricultural area which has a thirteenth century parish church. Waddesdon is perhaps best known as the location of the Rothschild family built, Renaissance style, Waddesdon Manor (currently administered by the National Trust), attracting plenty of visitors to the area.

Still dominated by buildings built by the Rothschild family (properties built for manor personnel, the Five Arrows hotel and the village hall), the village today houses a population of approximately 2,097 (2011). Waddesdon previously had a rail station which linked it with near by Aylesbury, this has long since closed & the village may only be reached by road (A41). The parish of Waddesdon covers a little over 7,000 acres (combined with Wormstone, Westcott, Woodham & Eythrope).

Waddesdon Manor BucksThe Historical Past of Waddesdon: Clearly a Saxon settlement up until the Norman conquest, Waddesdon manor was controlled by one of Queen Edith's men, Brictric, in those long gone, principally undocumented times. In the 1086 Domesday Book the manor was described as controlled by Miles Crispin & being worth 27 hides. Ferdinand died in 1898, the estate and manor passing down to his sister, Alice Charlotte de Rothschild. Together with being a residence the Manor was designed to hold the huge collection of tapestries, furniture and art, accumulated by the Baron. In 1957, James de Rothschild died and Waddesdon Manor House came to be a well known visitor attraction when it was entrusted to the National Trust.
