The Manor at WaddesdonA History of Waddesdon: Without doubt a Saxon village just before the conquest by the Normans, Waddesdon manor was retained by one of Queen Edith's men, Brictric, in those very early, principally unrecorded times. In the 1086 Domesday Book the manor was noted down as controlled by Miles Crispin and priced at 27 hides. Later Waddesdon manor was to be awarded to Henry of Oxford and then to the Courtenay family, it changed hands over and over again until ultimately passing to John 7th Duke of Marlborough. In eighteen seventy four the 7th Duke of Marlborough (John Spencer Churchill) sold off his complete Bucks landed estate, which included the village of Waddesdon, to Ferdinand de Rothschild, a politician (he was High Sheriff of Bucks and Liberal Member of Parliment for Aylesbury), art collector & part of the prosperous Rothschild banking family of Austria.

Waddesdon Manor: Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild proceeded to build the impressive Waddesdon Manor House, on a layout by Gabrielle-Hippolyte Destailleur, in the Renaissance style of a 16th C French chateau, right down to the wine cellars. Ferdinand died in 1898, the estate passing down to his sister, Alice Charlotte de Rothschild. Besides housing the Baron's massive collection of furniture, tapestries and art, the Manor also functioned as a family residence. In the late 1950's, following the passing of James de Rothschild, Waddesdon Manor was bequeathed to the National Trust, it thereafter became a recognized visitor destination. There's lots of things that entice visitors to Waddesdon Manor including high-quality restaurants, conference rooms, gift shops, kid's corner, a first class marriage venue, a plant centre and even more added to the landscaped gardens and the wonderful house itself featuring its collections of artwork, statues and furniture. Across the centuries, Waddesdon has been a typically agricultural village and as well as the current day name has been known varyingly as Votesdone (11th C) and Woddesdon (14th century). Among alternative crafts that have supported local folks along with agriculture were silk manufacture and lace manufacture. The construction of Waddesdon's parish church Saint Michael & All Angels was begun in 1190, it was extended & embellished frequently throughout the years, in particular through the medieval and Victorian periods. The Font was built in around 1400, the church tower was rebuilt in 1892, substituting the one built in the fourteenth century.
