Review of Waddesdon: To be found approximately 10 kilometers west of Aylesbury, the parish and small village of Waddesdon is a traditional agricultural community that has a 13th century parish church. Waddesdon has pretty much been an estate village since the late nineteenth century when the remarkable Renaissance style Waddesdon Manor was established by the affluent Rothschilds family, alongside lodging for the house staff.

The majority of the buildings put up for the Rothschilds (the Five Arrows hotel, the village hall, and properties built for manor staff) are very prominent in present day Waddesdon and they are inhabited by and cherished by its populace of around 2,000 (in 2011). Waddesdon parish comprises around seven thousand acres (together with Westcott, Woodham, Eythrope and Wormstone). Waddesdon once had a rail station which connected it with neighbouring Aylesbury, this is long shut down & the village can only be accessed by road (A41).

Waddesdon Manor HouseWaddesdon's Past History: Just before the Conquest by the Normans, Waddesdon would have been a Saxon village, the manor being retained by one of Queen Edith's men, Brictric. In the 1086 Domesday Book the manor was being worth 27 hides and listed to be retained by Miles Crispin. Waddesdon manor was controlled by various people prior to finally passing to John Spencer Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough in the 19th century, these included Henry of Oxford, the Courtenay family and Thomas Earl of Devon. Art collector, politician & one of a well-off Austrian banking family, Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, obtained the complete Bucks landed estate of the 7th Duke of Marlborough (John Spencer Churchill) in the late nineteenth century, that included The village of Waddesdon.

Waddesdon Manor House: The impressive Waddesdon Manor House, in the Renaissance style of a 16th c French chateau, wine cellars and all, was founded by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, using a design by Gabrielle-Hippolyte Destailleur. The manor and estate was inherited by Alice Charlotte de Rothschild, Baron Ferdinand's sister, after he died in 1898. An important tourist destination came to be when the National Trust took control of the administration of the Manor after the passing of James de Rothschild. Today's Waddesdon Manor offers extensive landscaped gardens, an internationally acclaimed displays of furniture, paintings and decorative arts, a plant centre, a Rococo style aviary, a wine cellar, gift shops, conference rooms, a marriage venue (The Dairy at Waddesdon), a child's corner, gift shops and high class restaurants. A multitude of events and activities are held at the Manor all year long including food markets, art displays, carol singing, wine tasting events, and horticultural shows.

Waddesdon throughout the years has been a typically farming community, it has previously had the titles Votesdone (11th C) and Woddesdon (fourteenth century), along with the existing spelling of the name. During the eighteenth century the village for a while had a go at silk manufacture, a smallish factory being founded in 1843 used as an addition to a much bigger factory in nearby Aylesbury. Lace manufacture was also done by some of the female citizens of the parish during the mid to late 19th century. The parish church of St Michael and All Angels was originally built in about 1190 in Waddesdon, the font dates from around 1400 & the present church tower from 1892.
