Review of Waddesdon: An ancient farming area with a 13th century parish church, Waddesdon is based around nine and a half kilometres west of Aylesbury in Bucks (Buckinghamshire). Waddesdon is perhaps best known as the location of the Rothschild dynasty built, Renaissance style, Waddesdon Manor (at present taken care of by the National Trust), drawing numerous tourists to the area.

A lot of the buildings put up for the Rothschild family (the village hall, the Five Arrows hotel & houses built for manor staff) are very prominent in present day Waddesdon and therefore lived in & cherished by its populace of approximately 2,100 (in 2011). Waddesdon in former times had a rail station which connected it with neighbouring Aylesbury, this is now closed down & the village can just be reached by road (A41). The parish comprises an area of 7,252 acres (in conjunction with Wormstone, Westcott, Woodham and Eythrope).

Waddesdon ManorThe Historical Past of Waddesdon: Undeniably a Saxon settlement previous to the Norman conquest, Waddesdon manor was retained by Brictric, one of Queen Edith's men, in those long gone, generally undocumented days. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the manor was shown as being controlled by Miles Crispin and having a value of 27 hides. Eventually the manor of Waddesdon was awarded to Henry of Oxford and then to the Courtenay family, it switched control over and over until finally ending up with John 7th Duke of Marlborough. It was the 7th Duke of Marlborough who, in the 1870's, sold Waddesdon and his complete Buckinghamshire landed estate to Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild an art enthusiast, MP and member of the successful Rothschild banking dynasty.

Waddesdon Manor: The Renaissance style Waddesdon Manor House was consequently established by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, copying a 16th C French chateau, wine cellars and all. The estate and manor passed on to Baron Ferdinand's sister, Alice Charlotte de Rothschild, in 1898, when Ferdinand passed away at the Manor itself in 1898, on his 59th birthday. As well as holding the Baron's vast collection of tapestries, art and furniture, the Manor also served as a family residence. In 1957, right after the passing of James de Rothschild, Waddesdon Manor House was handed to the National Trust, it later came to be a very popular tourism attraction. Today's Waddesdon Manor showcases large gardens, a world-renowned collection of paintings, furniture and ornamental arts, a plant centre, a Rococo style aviary, a wine cellar, gift shops, conference areas, a marriage venue (The Dairy at Waddesdon), a childrens corner, first class restaurants and gift shops. Countless functions take place at Waddesdon Manor and grounds throughout the year including food markets, art exhibitions, carol singing, horticultural shows and wine samplings.

Other than the modern title the community of Waddesdon has also been named Votesdone (11th C) and Woddesdon (fourteenth century), across the years it's principally survived through agriculture and farming. Other than agriculture and farming, lace manufacture and silk manufacturing are different ways that local folks made a living in the area in the past. The structure of the parish church St Michael and All Angels started in 1190, it was extended & improved repeatedly through the years, in particular in the medieval and Victorian periods. The Font was built in around 1400, the church tower was reconstructed in 1892, taking the place of the one constructed during the 14th century.
