Review of Waddesdon: An old farming community boasting a thirteenth century church, Waddesdon is located about 6 miles west of Aylesbury in The Vale of Aylesbury. The renowned Waddesdon Manor is found close to the village, built in sixteenth century Renaissance style by the prosperous Rothschild family in the late 19th century.

Waddesdon today houses a population of about 2,100 (2011) & is still dominated by structures constructed for the Rothschild family (the Five Arrows Hotel, the Village Hall, & dwellings built for Manor personnel). The parish of Waddesdon (along with Eythrope, Woodham, Wormstone & Westcott) comprises an area of 7,252 acres. Previously linked with nearby Aylesbury by train, Waddesdon railway station is long decommissioned & the village can now only be accessed by road (the A41).

The Manor at WaddesdonWaddesdon History: Previous to the Norman conquest, Waddesdon was clearly a Saxon settlement, the manor being possessed by Brictric, one of Queen Edith's men. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the manor was having a worth of twenty seven hides & registered as being retained by Miles Crispin. Eventually the manor of Waddesdon was to be accorded to Henry of Oxford and later to the Courtenay family, it switched control many times until eventually passing to John 7th Duke of Marlborough. In the late nineteenth century the 7th Duke of Marlborough (John Spencer Churchill) sold off his entire Buckinghamshire landed estate, which included the parish of Waddesdon, to Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, a politician (he was High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire and Liberal MP for Aylesbury), art enthusiast & the successful Rothschild banking family of Austria.

Waddesdon Manor: Ferdinand de Rothschild proceeded to construct the spectacular Waddesdon Manor House, on a layout by Gabrielle-Hippolyte Destailleur, in the Renaissance style of a 16th C French chateau, wine cellars and all. Baron Ferdinand died in 1898, his estate and manor being inherited by his sister, Alice Charlotte de Rothschild. Waddesdon Manor was entrusted to the National Trust on the death of James de Rothschild in 1957, it then came to be a very popular visitor hotspot. There are lots of aspects which bring visitors to Waddesdon Manor for example fine restaurants, conference areas, gift outlets, kid's area, a first class wedding venue, a garden centre and even more combined with the gardens plus the beautiful Manor itself with its collections of fine art, sculptures and fine furniture. A wide range of events and activities take place at Waddesdon Manor all through the year such as carol singing, art exhibitions, food markets, wine tastings, and horticultural events.

Other than the present title the community of Waddesdon has also been named Votesdone (11th C) and Woddesdon (fourteenth century), over the years it has mostly counted on agriculture and farming. Apart from agriculture and farming, lace manufacturing and silk manufacture are alternative ways that local people made some money in Waddesdon through the years. In approximately 1190 building was started on Waddesdon's Saint Micheal & All Angels parish church, the current tower supplanted a fourteenth century one in 1892, the font dates from 1400.
